Growing up, my mom would usually say things like, “You know, when you’re married… blah blah blah.”
Lately her language has changed to, “If you get married… blah blah blah.”
It may just be political correctness and her desire not to be presumptuous etc.
… But it’s terrifying.

Idol Thoughts
Auditions are over, thank goodness. My problem this year with auditions was there weren’t enough of them. I still enjoy the new judges and the show is a lot more fun than it used to be. But the editing is my concern now. It seemed like we only saw one audition per show segment. We used to knock out a handful.
I’m afraid this underexposure to contestants will be a...

Video Essay: Deep Focus: Superman Returns →
I’m so upset that I didn’t think to write or create this before. It’s a brilliant, poignant look at one of my favorite movies: Superman Returns. I’m not exaggerating when I say this movie changed my life. So to see it taken so seriously and explained so well, means a lot to me. Now I’m thinking of making my own video essay perhaps. I’d love to take the time to...

A story of a decade long desire…
In 2001 a movie came out called Vanilla Sky. In it, Tom Cruise plays an extremely wealthy individual. (That’s all you need to know in the context of this story.) At one point, he checks his watch and the camera gives us a close up of it for about two seconds.
I didn’t notice it when I saw the film in theaters, but when I got my hands on the DVD...

Things I Learned From Re-Watching the LOTR Trilogy This Weekend:
(Spoilers Ahoy)
- Pippin is a piece of shit. He ruins EVERYTHING. First he starts the fire on Weathertop that attracts the Nazgul and gets Frodo stabbed. Then he disturbs the waters in front of the mines of Moria which upsets the Octopus thing that forces them inside. Then, while in Moria, he knocks a skeleton down a well and...

How a Task Becomes a Chore Becomes a Nightmare
Went to the nearest dealership to get my state inspection sticker taken care of.
They don’t do inspections there. Directed me elsewhere with non-sensical verbal directions.
Search ‘car inspection’ with my phone. Am directed to local Pep Boys.
Arrive at Pep Boys. They don’t do inspections. Recommend Goodyear.
Arrive at...

X-Men: First Class - SIGSI →
This is the latest post on my film review site. I felt it deserved a little more attention because honestly, this has to be the best movie I’ve seen so far this year. I’m simply in love with it and, like with all things I love, I have a compulsion to share it with the world. Go see it!

Scott Pelley to Replace Couric on CBS Evening News →
This excites me greatly. I love 60 Minutes and regularly refer to it as the best news show on television. And part of the reason is because of Scott Pelley and the gravitas he brings to his pieces.
I already put the date of the change in my calendar (June 6th (D-Day, no less)) and will definitely start watching. (As of right now I watch no evening news program with regularity.)

You know what I have never liked? When people say something critical or judgmental about someone, and then someone else tries to keep that person in line by saying something to the effect of ‘you’re no better than they are.’
This whole idea that nobody is ‘better’ than anybody else (something we tend to instill in children) is bullshit.
I’m way better than...

Growing up we used to listen to Les Miserables while driving in the car as a family. And I have a many year late confession to make: In the show they sing the line, “the blood of the martyrs will water the meadows of France.” But for the longest time I thought they were saying, “the blood of the martyrs will water the medals of friends.” So I just wanted to retroactively...

Gather ye rosebuds while ye may,
Old Time is still a-flying: And this same flower that smiles to-day
To-morrow will be dying. The glorious lamp of heaven, the sun,
The higher he’s a-getting, The sooner will his race be run,
And nearer he’s to setting. That age is best which is the first,
When youth and blood are warmer; But being spent, the worse, and worst
Times still succeed the...

I was revisiting some older music in my iTunes library lately and something struck me. I realized there are a lot of songs that have become so popular and so well-known that most people don’t listen to them anymore. If they come up on your iPod, you immediately skip them. In a few cases it is even ‘uncool’ to listen to some of them because they have become so played.
But this...

Another wonderful post from an A.V. Club writer. This time it’s Nathan Rabin (@nathanrabin) defending so-called ‘slackers.’ Short and sweet. It’s a must read.
