Mr. Bill George

"It's not who I am underneath, but what I blog that defines me."

I was revisiting some older music in my iTunes library lately and something struck me. I realized there are a lot of songs that have become so popular and so well-known that most people don’t listen to them anymore. If they come up on your iPod, you immediately skip them. In a few cases it is even ‘uncool’ to listen to some of them because they have become so played.

But this phenomenon bothers me. I feel as though we are taking these songs for granted. They have achieved the status they have for a reason: they are great songs. People know them by heart and play them endlessly because they are so damn good. And if you go back and re-listen (and I mean really listen) you can recapture the magic they exude.

So here are a few examples of songs that grew so big we now ignore them. But I urge you go back, clear your mind and try to pretend you are hearing them for the first time. Then you’ll realize what a sin it is to immediately skip over them while shuffling. (I tried to mix in different time periods and genres but classic rock still dominates, sorry.)
